Carrie Marie Underwood is an American singer, songwriter and actress from Oklahoma. She sings country, country pop and country rock music, and plays guitar and piano. Underwood rose to fame as the winner of the fourth season of American Idol in 2005, but her career is defined by her work as a country superstar rather than a reality show contestant. She has sold millions of records and earned dozens of awards. She is known as the "reigning queen" of country music, and TIME magazine has listed her as one of the "100 Most Influential People in the World".

Some of Underwood's best selling songs are "Some Hearts", "Jesus, Take the Wheel", "All-American Girl", "Blown Away" and "Something in the Water", the song that earned her a seventh Grammy Award. In the past ten years of her career, Underwood has sold more than 65 million albums and songs throughout the world. Her income from sales and concert tours is estimated at over $110 million, making her the biggest American Idol earner of all time.
Underwood began singing in church at age 3 and later learned to play guitar and piano. In school she never missed an opportunity to sing in school plays and talent shows. But in high school, she began to put aside her dreams of a music career and focused on more typical teenager activities, like softball and cheerleading. Besides helping out on the family farm, Underwood took jobs as a waitress and gas station cashier in her hometown. When she auditioned for American Idol in St. Louis, she was almost ready to graduate from college. After she won, she went on tour throughout the U.S. but still found time to finish her college education and get her degree in communication and journalism. Her first big starring role came in 2013 when she played the part of Maria in a televised production of The Sound of Music.
