Valentine’s Day is all about love! Sometimes, words just aren’t enough. Sometimes, love is a feeling that can only be expressed through music. Today we are going to learn about three different types of love songs. One is from Chopin (our Musician of the Week), one is from a hit Broadway musical, and one is a pop song I’m sure you’ll recognize. You are going to fall in love with these love songs.

Chopin was known for his astounding ability to make his audience feel his emotions through his music. This song, “Romance” from his Piano Concerto No. 1 was written to make you feel in love. It is rumored that Chopin was thinking of a beautiful soprano singer by the name of Konstancja Gładkowska. In fact, he was quoted as saying that the song was “something [that] has involuntarily crept into my head through my eyes, I love to indulge it, even though it may be all wrong.” Can you feel the love in this song?

We all know the story of Cinderella, and how she fell in love with, and married, her Prince Charming. It’s a great love story! This song, from the musical by Rodgers and Hammerstein, tells about how Prince Charming felt when he first saw Cinderella walk into that ball in her beautiful dress from the fairy godmother. You’ll see the queen and king dancing, but you’ll hear Prince Charming singing. He’s dreamy!

Romeo and Juliet is one of the greatest love stories ever told. Two kids fall in love only to hear their parents tell them no. Why? Because their families don’t like each other. There’s fighting and swords and lots of drama and the two kids never really get to be in love freely. Taylor Swift’s “Love Story” is very similar to this story, and that similarity is reflected in her music video.
